Types of Training

Training includes a wide range of learning opportunities and learning activities.  In general, trainings can be classified into basic literacy skills training, technical skills training, interpersonal skills training, and problem solving training.

Most workplaces provide basic literacy skills training, especially with the advent of new technologies, new concepts, new terminologies and new ideas. Companies organize seminars to upgrade the awareness of their employees on modern innovations, advancements and breakthroughs.

Advancement in technology also led to the increasing demand for technical skills trainings.  In modern times, technical skills trainings have become increasingly crucial in an organization’s operation due to the changes in technology and the changes in structural designs.  Innovations in technology also led to more job changes and modifications, thus, leading to the need for technical skills trainings.  As an answer to the increasing technological advancements, organizations and companies get rid of traditional barriers.  Due to this expansion, employees also need to expand their skills and capacities.

Most employees work in teams.  Most companies and organizations emphasize teamwork, unity and interdependence.  An employee’s ability to work with his or her superiors, co-workers and subordinates are considered crucial and important in his or her work performance.  Most leaders look for members who have excellent interpersonal skills and most leaders strive to improve their members’ interpersonal skills.  Leadership trainings, teambuilding, trainings on communication skills, listening skills, conflict resolution, giving and receiving feedback are some of the trainings usually organized and facilitated to improve members’ or employees’ interpersonal skills.

Aside from working with other people, another skill considered essential in an employee’s effective work performance is critical thinking or problem solving skills.  This skill also reflects how an employee deals with a nonroutine task or with complex decisions.  Trainings in problem solving usually include sessions in analyzing alternatives, selecting solutions, and improving their logic and reasoning.  These trainings have also been implemented in organizations or companies as part of the total quality management (TQM) principle.
